UI Design

Project timeline

Duration - 1 month (Sepetmber - Oct 2023)

Solo Project
Context

For this project I examined the sign up flow of Tutor Orial which offered online tutoring for undergraduate students. I conducted an initial heuristic analysis of it. The brief was to devise 2 hypotheses and test them to choose one and refine it based on what we felt the flow was missing. This was done over 3 rounds of interviews and constant refining of the prototype. At every stage, I tried to get as many insights as I could from students about what they needed and wanted out of a service like this.

Goal

Establishing trust and providing enough information before asking a user to sign up, provide details, and pay.

Tutor Orial's Interface

Problem Discovery

The biggest problem for me in the original flow was the lack of credibility and order of the process. In the flow, you had to pay before you chose a tutor and the information provided about each tutor was very insufficient. It felt untrustworthy.

Hypotheses

The flow also lacked clear visibility of status and any way of helping the user make the correct choice. My hypotheses were -

  1. Options and information should be provided at the start so a user can make an informed choice.

  2. A user’s needs must be clarified before making a choice and purchasing a product.

Heuristic Analysis

Hypothesis 1

Options and information should be provided at the start so a user can make an informed choice.

This prototype includes different kinds of filters to make sure a user finds the perfect tutor for their needs. It’s a simple flow if the user knows what they want.

Hypothesis 2

A user’s needs must be clarified before making a choice and purchasing a product.

This prototype includes a quiz to help match a user with the perfect tutor for their needs. This flow is ideal for a user who isn’t quite sure what they need and have additional needs.

Insights from User Research

Key Takeaway

Students wanted more specificity in the questions asked and information provided to feel like the service is credible.

Solution

For this project, I went ahead with the option of the quiz, which you would ideally use if you were new to online tutoring. As I interviewed more users, I gleaned more insights on things students were not comfortable sharing and information they wanted before committing to a tutor. I also had to consider factors like the involvement of parents and the kind of information they would require for this company to seem trustworthy.

I added questions like language of instruction and information such as style of teaching and specific needs/ areas of focus so a user could get the most out of their session.

Final Prototype

Reflections and next steps

My favorite part of this project was interacting with undergrads and getting their feedback on my prototypes. Their insight was extremely valuable. In the future, I would like to refine the filters and other search options for Tutor Orial.
